Claim Tiles Other Players Discard

There is a tile you want, but you just cannot draw it…

Under certain conditions, you can claim others' discarded tiles.

For example, you have A and C, and the player immediately before you discards B.

If you declare Chi,

you can claim this B.

You can declare Chi

when you can form 3 consecutive letters, like ABC or BCD.

For example, you have 2 F tiles, and someone discards an F.

Declare Pon to claim that F and make 3 Fs.

Place the claimed tile on your right with the 2 tiles needed to claim it.

You now have 12 tiles. Discard 1 unwanted tile, as after drawing.

In Chi or Pon, tiles claimed from others lie sideways so you can spot them.

You can only declare Chi when the player immediately before you discards a tile.

You can declare Pon no matter who discarded the tile.

Chi and Pon are very useful techniques,

but they have a major drawback: you can no longer declare Riichi.

Without Riichi, you need another Yaku to achieve Agari.

If you are stuck and cannot find a way to achieve Agari, discard the tiles you claimed.

Once you have no sideways tiles claimed from others, you can declare Riichi again.

4 Copies of the Same Letter for Kan

With 3 matching letters, you can declare Kan if someone discards the 4th.

Claim the 4th tile and turn it sideways, as with Chi or Pon.

You can also declare Kan when you collect all 4 copies of the same letter yourself.

Since all the tiles are your own, place them all vertically.

While you have a Kan, you get an extra dora indicator!

This adds more Dora and raises the score.

It also gives other players more Dora, so choose your timing carefully.

Discarding any of a Kan's 4 tiles ends it. The extra dora indicator turns face down again.

Points Needed for Riichi

You must pay 1,000 points to declare Riichi.

You cannot declare Riichi with fewer than 1,000 points.

The player who achieves Agari in that round collects all Riichi payments.

If you don't achieve Agari, your Riichi status is cleared.

You must pay another 1,000 points to declare Riichi again.

If someone else looks likely to achieve Agari first, wait and see without declaring Riichi.

Watch Out for Furiten

Someone discarded an Agari tile, but for some reason you cannot declare Ron.

You might be in Furiten.

You enter Furiten if you've discarded one of your Agari tiles or pass one up without declaring Ron.

While in Furiten, you cannot declare Ron.

If you enter Furiten, draw an Agari tile yourself and achieve Agari by Tsumo.
